This week, we will continue our unit in Ancient Egypt.

Monday- Mummies reading quiz with reading.
Tuesday- Complete graphic organizer
Wednesday-Thursday- Writing workshop
Friday- CNN quiz. Write in class essay.

This week students will continue learning and participating in activities covering the Middle Ages. Students will be asked to analyze and describe life on a Medieval Manor, the Medieval Knights Code of Chivalry, Knighthood, and Armor. The test for the first part of the Middle Ages will be Friday. In addition, students will continue reading Blood Red Horse both in class and at home. Students will also be assessed on their comprehension of Blood Red Horse.

• Monday: Read Ch. 6 of Blood Read Horse. Will individually read “Life on a Manor” and answer questions in class. HW: Students will finish reading and questions if did not finish in class. Read Blood Red Horse.
• Tuesday: Continue Middle Ages PowerPoint Notes – Knights, Chivalry, and Medieval Armor HW: Read Blood Read Horse
• Wednesday: Participates in Code of Chivalry and Armor in class activity. HW: Work on Test Review and Read Blood Read Horse.
• Thursday: Work on Test Review, finish Maps, and Vocabulary. (Teacher will be present for any questions or concerns)
• Friday: Middle Ages Test part 1 (after test student will read Blood Red Horse) HW: Read Blood Red Horse

April 21 - April 25

This week the students will begin the reading the novel Blood Red Horse, chapters 1-5. Students will also begin the Unit on the Middle Ages, and will be learning about the culture, Charlemagne, and the Feudal System. - Monday: Students will take Rome Quiz 2 "The Fall of Rome." Following the Quix the students will read "A Brief Summary of the Middle Ages" passage and answer fifteen question that are directly related to the reading. - Tuesday: Student will ready chapter 1 of Blood Red Horse, and will begin to work on the maps that explain the evolving geography of the Middle Ages, as well as, the vocabulary. - Wednesday: Students will begin taking notes in the Not Pack that the teacher provides them, and will cover culture and the life of Charlemagne. Once finished with the notes the students will watch a Crash Course on the Dark Ages, and to work on the maps and vocabulary. - Thursday: Students will continue working in the notes and discuss life on a manor, the Feudal System, and touch on Knighthood. - Friday: Students will take Blood Red Horse Quiz on chapters 1-5. Following the Quiz the students will participate in an in class Feudalim Activity where the students will assume the role of a King, a Bishop, a Nobleman, a Knight, or a Peasant, and will analyze what life must have been like in the Middle Ages from the asigned prospective. *Students are to be reading the novel for homework.*

April 14th- 18th

This week students will be studying about Marcus Aurelius.  Students will be analyzing his role in the Roman Empire and his role in the fall of Rome.  Students will also be identifying reasons for the fall of the Rome.

• Monday, April 14th: Reading and reading questions on Marcus Aurelius.  Students will be given the questions.  Reading is posted to schoology. (Reading will also be available for those students without access to schoology.)
• Wednesday, April 16th: Reading and reading quiz on Bread and Circus (Roman gladiator fights) .  Students will be given the questions.  Reading is posted to schoology.  (Reading will also be available for those students without access to schoology.)
• Thursday, April 17th: Students will be given the study guide for the Roman quiz.  Students are expected to complete the study guide on their own.
• Monday, April 21st: Rome Quiz

** Please make sure to have your own copy of Blood Red Horse in class by Thursday, April 17th. If you purchased a book through Little Professor Mrs. Flinkow will have your copy in class.

April 7th- April 11th

This week students will continue their unit on Ancient Rome. 

* All students need to have a copy of Blood Red Horse in class by April 14th.  If you ordered a copy through Little Professor, books will be given to students in class.

March 31- April 4

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a great Spring Break.  This week students will continue studying Ancient Rome. Students will be learning about the Punic Wars, Julius Caesar, Roman Emperors, and Roman Achievements.

• Wednesday, April 2:  ALL Roman government graphic organizers are DUE! 
• Friday, April 4: Roman Achievements Reading Quiz.  (Reading will be posted to schoology.) 

** Information will be coming home about a novel, Blood Red Horse, that students will be reading this 9 weeks.  Please make sure to full read deadlines for having the novel in class. 

March 10th- 14th

Good morning!  We are one week away from starting the 4th 9 weeks.  This year is going by so fast.  This week students will be wrapping up the unit on Ancient Greece.  Students will be studying Greek Mythology.  Please see assignments and due dates listed below.

• Mythology Quiz Thursday, March 13th. Students will receive a study guide Tuesday in class.  The study guide and PowerPoint have been posted to schoology.
• Mythology Writing Assignment due Thursday, March 13th. Students will be creating their own myth.  Students will you use the basis of Greek Mythology (characters and plots) to create their own myth.  Instructions and Brainstorm Graphic Organizer has been posted to schoology.
• CNN Student News Quiz Friday, March 14th.

March 3rd- 7th

Thank you so much for all your support for Greek Fest!  It was a huge success.  We are so appreciative of the support you all showed.

• Greece Test #2 will be Monday, March 10th. A study guide will be given to the students Tuesday (March 4th) in class and we will review together Friday (March 7th). 
• DBQ: Alexander the Great.  This week we will focus on Alexander the Great through notes and Document Based Questions. 

February 24th- 28th

GREEK FEST is this week!!  Please join the 8th grade in support of such a great event.  The 5th annual Greek Fest will be held this Wednesday, February 26th @ 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

• TOGA:  All students should bring in their bed sheet they will use as a toga by TOMORROW (Tuesday, February 25th)

• Reading Quiz Thursday:  There will be a reading quiz Thursday on Alexander the Great reading passage.  This reading passage has been posted to schoology.  It is a long passage, students need to prepare accordingly.

February 3rd- 7th

What a week we had last week.  Due to the winter storm our week in class will look very similar to what was planned for last week. This week students will begin a unit on Greek governments. Students will also study the 2 major Greek city-states: Athens and Sparta.

• DBQ: Sparta

January 27- 31

This week students will be finishing up their unit on The Iliad. Students will be completing an in-class essay Friday, January 24th.  Students will be given an essay planning sheet Thursday in class and I will post the planning sheet to schoology on Thursday. 

January 13th- 16th

Last Friday we began our unit on The Iliad by Homer.  Friday, in class, students read a summary of The Iliad and completed a close reading strategy on the content they read.  For homework Friday, students were assigned a set of reading guide questions to complete by Tuesday.

* There will be no "official" homework this week.  However, students will be working on a project in class this week.  Any classwork not complete is homework.

January 6th- 10th

Happy New Year!  Hope you each enjoyed a nice relaxing break.  Today marks the start of the second semester of school.  I can not believe how fast the first semester passed by.  This semester students will study Greece, Rome, and The Middle Ages.

A few things to look forward to this semester include:The 8th Grade Greek Festival (we will have a parent volunteer meeting in the coming weeks) and the reading of Blood Red Horse (The historical fiction novel all 8th grade students will read in Social Studies.).

This week...

Wednesday- Heinrich Schliemann Reading (Reading is posted on schoology and class copies are available.  Students should prepare for a reading quiz Thursday.)
Thursday- Archaeology: Was there a Troy? (Reading is posted on schoology and class copies are available.  Students should prepare for a reading quiz and discussion on Friday.)
Friday- In class students will partake in a close reading strategy on the story of the Iliad. Students will have reading questions based on the reading and discussion to answer for homework.
