This Week and Semester Exam

This week we are finishing up the unit on World Religions.  Students will be given a study guide for the semester exam Thursday.  Students will have class time Thursday and Friday to work on their study guide.  Monday we will review together for the Social Studies Semester Exam.

  • Thursday (December 12th) - Study Guide for the semester exam will be given to students and posted on Schoology.
  • Thursday and Friday (December 12th and 13th) - Students will be given class time to work on their study guide.
  • Monday (December 15th) - Semester Exam class review
  • Tuesday (December 16th)- Social Studies Semester Exam
* ALL missing assignments are DUE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13th.

This week we will begin our study on the major 5 world religions.  This material will be covered on the mid-term exam.

November 18th- 22nd

There will be no reading passages this week for homework.  Monday and Tuesday students will work in class on Document Based Questions (DBQ) about the Silk Road.  Students will then prepare for their Ancient China Test. Students should start to prepare for their test now.  Students can review all notes, readings, and graphic organizers.

November 11th- 15th

This week we will continue our study of Ancient China.  Students will learn about the Han, Tang, and Song Dynasties as well as a focus on the Silk Road and its impact on China and the Western World.

This week we will be looking at the Great Wall of China in detail.  Students will identify the costs and benefits of the Great Wall of China.

We have a busy week ahead of us!  This week we will be studying the Indus Valley River Civilization.  Conference days will be Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.  If you requested a conference you should have received confirmation regarding your conference.

  • Tuesday- Life in the Indus Valley reading quiz.  Notes.  HW: Bring a poster for red ribbon week. Study guide for Indus Valley quiz will be given to students.

September 30th- October 4th

Wow, I can not believe we are already beginning the month of October.  This week we will continue studying Ancient Egypt.
  • Ancient Egyptian Daily Life Project: We have been working on Ancient Egyptian Daily Life project last week in class and we will continue working on this project this week in class.  Tomorrow (Tuesday) ALL research should be complete.  Students will work with their group to complete the product portion of the project Tuesday and Wednesday in class.  ALL projects are due FRIDAY.
  • Tuesday- King Tut Reading - Reading is posted on schoology.  If any student needs a paper copy of the reading they need to get one from Mrs. Flinkow in class. Be prepared for a reading quiz.
  • Thursday- Ramses Reading- Reading is posted on schoology. If any student needs a paper copy of the reading they need to get one from Mrs. Flinkow in class. Be prepared for a reading quiz.
  • Friday- CNN QUIZ, and PROJECTS DUE!
** Next WEDNESDAY (October 9th) will be the ANCIENT EGYPT TEST!  Students need to start studying NOW.  Students can begin studying notes and readings.  A study guide will be given to students Monday.

September 23rd- September 27th

  • The first part of the week will be spent preparing for students' first in-class essay.
  • In-Class Essay will be Wednesday.  All essays MUST be completed in class. 
  • Essay Question: Analyze the process and purpose of mummification and connect mummification to Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife.
  • Reading: Women In Ancient Egypt (Homework Wedsneday Night)
  • Thursday and Friday students will begin a project on the Daily Life of Egyptians.

This week in Social Studies

This week in Social Studies students will be analyzing the construction of the Great Pyramids and connecting pyramid building to ancient Egyptian religious beliefs.  Students will also analyze the process and purpose of mummification.

  • Reading Tuesday: How were the Pyramids built? Ancient Egyptian Afterlife Beliefs (be prepared for a reading quiz)

This week we will begin studying Ancient Egypt.  This is always a very interesting unit for students.  Below you will see a glimpse into our week in Social Studies.

  • Monday and Tuesday- DBQ on the Importance of the Nile River
  • Wednesday- Remembering 9/11
  • Thursday- Geographic challenges of Egypt and an overview of Egyptian culture. Review Writing Prompt from DBQ.  Homework: Pharaohs and Pyramids Reading.
  • Friday- CNN Quiz, Reading Quiz, and The Valley of the Kings (a glimpse into the different pharaohs' burial sites.)

August 26th- August 30th

This week we will begin studying the first civilization, Mesopotamia.  I am so excited to introduce to students to the major early river civilizations.  Students will analyze the characteristics of early civilizations pertaining to geography, government, technology, art, architecture, religion, and daily life. 

We will also be learning how to access and use schoology.  Schoology will be used a lot in my class.

* Readings this week will be given Monday and Wednesday for homework.

First Week!

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great first day of 8th grade at HMS and you are ready for a good year.  This week we will be studying Primary and Secondary Sources.  Below you will see important dates and assignments for this week. (August 19th- August 23rd)
